Is it time for a hearing test? A quick checklist
If you answer “yes” to one or more of these, a hearing test is worth booking:
- Do family members say the TV is too loud?
- Do you struggle to follow conversation in cafés, pubs or at busy family meals?
- Do you often ask people to repeat themselves?
- Is the phone harder to hear than it used to be?
- Do you notice ringing or buzzing in your ears?
The NHS notes that free online hearing checks, for example from the charity RNID, can be a useful first step (NHS).
What the hearing test involves

When to contact a GP or NHS 111 instead
Sudden hearing loss or rapidly worsening hearing needs urgent help, especially with earache or other symptoms. Contact your GP straight away or call NHS 111 (NHS). Don’t wait for a routine hearing test.
Your GP can also refer you to NHS audiology if your hearing is gradually getting worse.

How long does a hearing test take?
The NHS says a hearing test usually takes around 15 minutes to an hour, depending on which tests you need.
Do I need to see my GP before booking a hearing test?
No, not for a routine hearing test. But if your hearing has suddenly got worse, or you have ear pain or discharge, contact your GP or NHS 111 first.
